Escaping AI sameness: design as the real differentiator

When everyone ships the same models, the product — not the model — is the moat. Craft is what's left to compete on.

When every company builds on the same handful of models, the model stops being a differentiator. What's left is the product around it: the judgement about what to build, the interface people actually use, and the craft they can feel. In the age of AI, design is the moat.

Why does so much AI software feel identical?

Same models, same framework defaults, same chat-in-a-box pattern. The result is a wave of products that demo the same and forget to be about anything. Sameness isn't a technology problem; it's a design one.

What actually sets an AI product apart?

Not the underlying model, which your competitor can license tomorrow.

  • A sharp point of view on the one job the product is for.
  • An interface shaped to that job, not a generic prompt box.
  • Taste — the thousand small decisions a model won't make for you.
  • Trust, built from reliability and honesty, not features.

Is 'just add a chatbot' a strategy?

Rarely. A chat box is the lowest-effort shape for an AI feature and usually the wrong one. The better question is what the AI lets you remove — the steps, forms and waiting it can quietly delete.

How we use it

We start from the product and the person, and treat the model as an ingredient, not the dish. That's how an AI product ends up feeling like yours and no one else's.
